"Most of us can remember a time when a birthday - especially if it was one's own - brightened the world as if a second sun has risen."

- Robert Staughton Lynd

Birthdays

 How do we celebrate?

Bottom Line: you do nothing!

When do we celebrate?

We celebrate each child on his/her birthday, or as close to it as we can get if it's on a weekend.  Summer birthdays can be celebrated anytime, as long as it's not someone else's real birthday.  The child and I decide a date together, based on the half-year date, for example.

How do we celebrate?

At morning circle, we sing to the birthday child and play a special music box. After, the birthday child uses process of elimination to choose a birthday storybook from our classroom collection, which is then read to the class. Next, each classmate colors a birthday page which is made into a special "Birthday Book" to bring home as a keepsake. The birthday child gets to keep Little Bertie the Birthday Bear at his/her work area all day. In our K program at CP, we do not celebrate with treats from home.
